Partner, Energy and Industrial Practice
James has over 10 years’ leadership experience in executive search and talent management. He focuses on Senior Executive and Board appointments in energy, infrastructure, industry and related services. James has a proven track record of supporting public, private equity and family-owned companies in the UK and internationally.
I’ve always been interested in languages, and, after finishing my degree, I found my way into search by way of a CSR consultancy and an aggregates and building products business. Language is all about understanding interpretation and how we use words to shape our thoughts. Previously, I worked at Korn Ferry, CT Partners and Boyden.
I started out recruiting in the oil and gas sector, building deeper and wider networks across the energy value chain and into the broader industrial arena. I operate within engineering environments, with a particular focus on high-risk, high-cost, complex operating environments and their related supply chains.
I am fluent in Spanish and French and can speak passable Portuguese. For a particularly international sector and practice, having this grasp of foreign languages comes in useful. As a headhunter you are a consultant and ambassador. I’m a strong believer in quality of service and having a clear focus on outcomes, and I enjoy representing a business in the marketplace.
I particularly enjoy talking to a client about a specific role that has a clear impact on their business. We are a key part in helping clients deliver their strategies, and I feel privileged to be a facilitator in that capacity. There is intellectual stimulation associated with search, and, in particular, with senior appointments where there are a number of moving parts to be considered, including the political side of an appointment, the timing of announcements and stakeholder management. It’s about really getting under the skin and becoming a proponent of my client’s strategy.
What I like about industrial is the tangibility of the sector. Each industry process is optimised with scientific precision to create a net positive impact. Dealing with people means that decisions are steeped in both logic and emotion, and thus no two days are the same. Managing the complexity of human engagement is as rewarding as it is challenging!
Why I like working at Savannah
Having moved from much bigger firms, it’s refreshing to have ownership and accountability at a firm that has simplicity in its message. The fact that the consultant who wins the work delivers it is important to me, as I believe it’s the only way a firm can be truly client-centric while providing an outstanding service.
